Frankly speaking, I had no idea that it would be this good. I love the story (based on true events), choreography, music, editing, tears, smiles, the spoken and unspoken.
As Japan switched from coal to oil, coal mines started to shut down, making thousands jobless and utterly bitter. The times had changed but they had not. It is now up to the coalminers’ daughters to learn the Hawaiian traditional dance as the town makes a last attempt to save itself from doom. They are setting a Hawaiian theme spa resort… duh… they even have to borrow stoves to save the wilting palm trees.
This movie reminds me of something that the director of Berlin Library (I forgot her name…) had said during a sharing session. Sometimes, a new set of conditions would inevitably bring about change and growth. Thus, sometimes, in order to bring about changes and growth, you must first create a new set of conditions.
My favourite scenes are two dance sequences, one performed by the teacher and one by her student (watched silently by her mum). Watch it.
